Galaxy Z Flip 5G

Samsung sent out invites for its next (virtual) Unpacked event earlier this week. The Aug. 5 event is expected to feature a host of new devices, and a new leak seemingly gives us a peek at one of the new products set to be revealed.
In a tweet Friday, noted leaker Evan Blass shared what appears to be a promotional video for the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5G. Featuring a new bronze color, the foldable flip phone looks similar to the original $1,380 Galaxy Z Flip that was released earlier this year, though with the 5G name it should have at least get some updates to support connecting to the latest wireless networks.
It's unclear which, or if, US carriers will carry the new phone and which 5G networks it will support. AT&T and Sprint were the two US providers for the first Z Flip, which ran on 4G LTE networks.
Given its history, AT&T seems like a decent bet as, in addition to the Z Flip this year, the carrier was the only US provider to sell Samsung's Galaxy Fold tablet-style foldable when it finally came out last year.
Sprint has since merged with T-Mobile, which did not sell the Z Flip and backed out of selling the Fold after that foldable's design issues led to a lengthy delay. Verizon, meanwhile, is the exclusive home of Motorola's rival Razr foldable and has not yet carried a Samsung foldable device.
In addition to a new Z Flip, Samsung is also expected to introduce an updated line of Galaxy Note 20 phones and a successor to the original Galaxy Fold.
Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Self-Driving Car Successfully Drives Itself 1200 Miles Across China In Six Days

Chinese automaker and Ford's partner Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. announced the successful road trip of its self-driving car. The vehicle traveled from Chongqing in Southwest China to Beijing, which is in the northeast.

The journey covered more than 1,200 miles (almost 2,000 kilometers) and lasted for six days - that's an average of 200 miles (321.8 kilometers) a day. At least two of the company's self-driving cars accomplished the journey where they took routes in a live environment.

In a statement given to the Shenzhen stock exchange, the Chinese automaker said that its self-driving cars have used cameras and radar that allowed the pair to test a number of varying functions. According to the company, the driverless cars were able to assess automatic cruising, assisted driving when there's traffic congestion, lane keeping or changing and speed reduction by way of voice control and traffic sign recognition.

Li Yusheng, the project's chief engineer, said that one car had even reached up to 75 mph on the nation's open highway and managed to adapt to the changing road surface.
"The cars ran up to 120 km per hour on the highway, and adapted to the changing road surface," said Li.

Kong Zhouwei, a car tester, said that when the self-driving cars passed through small tunnels that have dim or zero lighting, their response time was slower. Kong attributed the cars' slow response rate to the difficulty in recognizing the road markings when the cars used their in-vehicle cameras after the external lights changed.

Kong said that the company plans to employ laser radar techniques in order to address this difficulty that the two cars encountered.

Other challenges that were seen during the road test included trucks that seemed wider than the lane and a couple of road sections and gas stations that required the cars to be under assisted driving.

Chongqing joins other Chinese companies such as Baidu, BYD, SAIC Motor, GAC Group and BAIC group in a global race to create self-driving cars with occasional or zero human intervention. The automaker plans to produce self-driving cars designed exclusively for traveling on highways and make them commercially available by 2018. It also plans to mass produce self-driving cars capable enough to navigate the nation's complicated urban roads by 2025.

Around the globe, there are at least 18 companies that are developing autonomous cars. These include Toyota, Audi and BMW to name a few.

Apple finally responded to concerns that were threatening to scuttle its once-promising wearables category. Its introduction of watchOS 3 at this week's WWDC has drawn high praise.

The Apple Watch represented the company's attempt to marry the ultimate Dick Tracy smart gadget with the genius of the iPhone, but it fell short. Instead of a convenience, it was more like an extra iPhone appendage -- and one that was far too slow and complicated for many consumers to navigate.

WatchOS 3 is a "significant and welcome upgrade" of the Apple Watch's previous capabilities, said Jitesh Ubrani, senior research analyst at IDC, who noted that the product was in need of improvements in performance and user interface.

"The notion of a smartwatch is new and somewhat foreign to most consumers," he told the E-Commerce Times. "In watchOS 3, Apple is bringing familiar concepts from iOS -- such as the control center and app dock -- to the small screen, and that will help lower the learning curve while alleviating some concerns of potential Watch owners.

Need for Speed

Among the two biggest concerns Apple Watch users and developers had expressed were difficulty in navigating buttons to get to apps and slow loading. The updated operating system addresses these shortcomings.

During the WWDC event in San Francisco, Kevin Lynch, vice president technology at Apple, demonstrated a professional soccer app, OneFootball, which loaded about seven times faster in the new operating system than in watchOS 2.

Apple has made several key changes to the way native and third-third party apps are stored and navigated in the update. They are easier to find, and they load faster. Favorite apps are kept in memory, supporting background updates with data and regularly refreshing information.

Responding to messages is simpler. Users can reply to incoming messages with a new feature called "Scribble," which allows them to write letters on the watch screen and have them converted into text to create an automated reply.

Customers using the watch to monitor health and fitness can set up five workout metrics, including distance, pace, active calories, heart rate and elapsed time, without the need for an extra swipe of the screen.

Users also can make secure payments within apps using Apple Pay directly from the watch.

OS Errors

Developers consider the latest version of the watchOS update as "watchOS 1.0" -- that is, the first stable, feature-complete Apple Watch operating system, said Tim Anglade, vice president, product at Realm.

Still, there are lingering, significant concerns related to the device hardware, which likely will give developers pause, he told the E-Commerce Times.

Issues such as weak battery life, the continued need to connect through the iPhone, and direct access to communication layers must be addressed before the category can reach its true potential, Anglade said.

It's also weak from a financial perspective, he added, "with no clear monetization path for developers, who spend the extra development cycles making watch apps."

Despite the shortcomings of the earlier OS releases, Apple Watch ended 2015 as the dominant product in the global smartwatch category, according Juniper Research.

Apple Watch owned 52 percent of the smartwatch market share in 2015, even though its initial launch took place in April, the firm reported early this year.

Samsung's Tizen, a well-regarded competitor, was unable to make a major dent in Apple's market share following its fall 2015 release, Juniper found. Overall, Android Wear watches controlled only about 10 percent of the category.

However, the fact that Apple introduced so many significant changes to the smartwatch operating system shows the company understands there is work to do, Ian Fogg, head of mobile analysis at IHS Technology, told the E-Commerce Times. It realizes that developers and consumers have not quite embraced the category to the fullest.

Mechanical engineer Anjan Contractor won a $125,000 grant last year to build a prototype 3D printer designed to print food for astronauts on long missions. Contractor's goal was to print a pizza with his open-source RepRap Mendel 3D printer — and it looks like he succeeded.

In the video from late last year, Contractor's printer takes food "building blocks" to create the crust, cheese, and so-called "protein layer" for the dish, all cooked while being printed out. Contractor promised last spring that the cartridges the printer uses will last 30 years. The printer is still in its earliest stages, but it now joins such producers as the ChefJet in its 3D-printable food ambitions. The world is now one small step closer to a Replicator.

Bentley used NASA technology to take this 53-billion-pixel picture of a car the world of technology

Look at the image above. Pretty nice picture of the Golden Gate bridge, huh? Well, WRONG. It's actually a pretty nice picture of a $330,000 car, the Bentley Mulsanne. You can't see the vehicle at this distance, but you can visit Bentley's website and zoom in yourself. It goes from panoramic view of the bridge, all the way down to a close-up of stitching of the Bentley logo on the passenger headrest.

The carmaker says it fitted together 70 individual photographs to create the image, using the same technology developed by NASA to make panoramas from photographs beamed back by the Curiosity rover on Mars. The resulting image of the Mulsanne contains 53 billion pixels (that's 53,000 megapixels) and Bentley says that if printed out it would be the same size as a football field.

The carmaker created the image to highlight the "attention to detail" it puts into its products. And sure, if you're buying a vehicle that costs around six times the average US annual salary (and that's before adding in any extras), you're probably right to expect more than the usual level of polish. Still, if I had that sort of money I'd probably skip the Bentley altogether and try and buy some of that NASA tech for myself. Who fancies a replica Curiosity ATV?

msi and assus graphics cards, the world of technology

PC graphics cards live and die on the strength of their benchmark performance, and the smallest advantage in those tests can sway customers to choose one brand over another. That’s why every manufacturer is desperate to present its wares in the best and fastest possible light, which in turn might be why MSI has been shipping review graphics cards clocked higher than its retail ones.

The discovery was made by TechPowerUp, who noticed that the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X card they were sent for review was running at faster GPU and memory clock speeds than the retail version. This was because the review card was set to operate in the OC (overclocking) mode out of the box, whereas the retail card runs in the more regular Gaming mode out of the box. The result? An unobservant reviewer might accidentally misrepresent the OC performance numbers as the stock results from the card, lending MSI’s product an unearned helping hand.

Looking back on its history of review products, the site found this was a recurring pattern with MSI stretching back for years. Fellow Taiwanese manufacturer Asus, in spite of having better global name recognition and reputation, has also shown itself guilty of pre-programming review cards with an extra overclocking boost.

Needless to say, the only goal of such actions is to deceive — both the consumer and the reviewer — though perhaps some companies have felt compelled to follow suit after the trend was identified among competitors.

American rival EVGA has seized the opportunity for some positive press off the back of the MSI and Asus news by reiterating its commitment for What You See Is What You Getgaming. The company promises that it only ever ships review units identical to the ones it puts on retail shelves, so any boosts or overclocking you see in reviews will also be present in the product you buy.

TechPowerUp revealed its findings on Thursday of last week, but as of writing today, there has not been any official response from either MSI or Asus.
